A pharmacy cannot be relocated or a new pharmacy established without approval from the Australian Community Pharmacy Authority (ACPA). An application to expand or contract must be made to the Department of Health.

The grant and relocation of an Approval Number is governed by the Pharmacy Location Rules.

A pharmacy cannot be relocated or a new pharmacy established without approval from the Australian Community Pharmacy Authority (ACPA). An application to expand or contract must be made to the Department of Health.

In addition to applying to the ACPA or Department of Health, the Pharmacy Council or Board in each State must issue an approval.

The following rules apply:

  1. seven rules for establishing a new pharmacy;
  2. three rules for relocation of an existing pharmacy; and
  3. one rule for expansion or contraction of a pharmacy.

Each rule has its own set of requirements which must be fully satisfied. These rules are very detailed and complete compliance is required.
